more detail

Heres a little update on EXACTLY how me and my group members take care of our fish from store to classroom.

Take the fish home in the bag, don't forget to ask from stress coat from Petco, the fish are able to die from stress. At Pet Kingdom and PetSmart, they provide it for you most of the time.

The fish can't last in the bag long, but make sure you have the tank running for at least 24 hours and everthing including the contidionting chemicals have already been put in the tank.

open the tank lid, and put the bag in the water. It should float. Leave fora bout 10-20 minutes, fish CAN die from temperature shock. It's important for the fish to adjust to the new tank and the tank temperature.

After 20 minutes has passed, use the next to transfew the fish. Make sure you keep them out of the water for no more than 3 seconds, they could die. Also make sure they don't flop out of the net, so transfer them over the tank. If they flop, make sure you get them in to the tank as soon as possible.

Fish aren't usually hungry after coming home, and they also need time to adjust to the new food. put a few flakes after about an hour in the tank, but don't expect them to eat it. If they do, that means they might be hungry and give them only 1 or 2 flakes.

By the end of the day, or at night, give them 4-5 flakes. small, if big only 1 or 2.
Do NOT keep the light on throughout the day, especially if it's not winter. If it's winter, keep it on. The light transfers heat to the tank, and if the water is warm (over 73 degrees) it can cause heart problems. keep the light on before you last see them, and make sure you turn it off when you first see them. Overnight, it can get too cold in the tank.
